  • We Say...

Australians traditionally celebrate Christmas at the beach, which explains why this album by internationally successful Australian kids' quartet the Wiggles conjures more visions of North Sydney than the North Pole. Still, the traditional Christmas themes (Santa, reindeer, family) on this bouncy collection will satisfy audiences in both hemispheres. "Let's Clap Hands for Santa Claus" is an infectious surf tune, while the Caribbean-tinged "Christmas Picnic" continues with the beach theme, this time gathering together the entire Wiggles family (including Wags the dog). The instrumental "Ding Dong Merrily on High" uses Christmas-y horns and skating rink-type organ music for a danceable holiday mix. The Wiggles subdue their customary exuberant performing style to cover Christmas classics like "Away in a Manger" and "Silent Night" with a simple vocal purity that effortlessly inspires sing-alongs. "Feliz Navidad" covers the classic Jose Feliciano tune, right down to the festive Spanish horns; those same mariachi horns help tell the story of the Magi "following the drummer boy" in "Unto Us This Holy Night." So even even though there's little snow to be found in this collection, there's still plenty of holiday spirit.
