They Say...
The Witches play sullen rock in a sort of updated Chocolate Watch Band/Standells style, but with less avowedly revivalist arrangements, toning down the sneering vocals some, and garnishing the production with thicker, more modern guitar textures. There's more attention paid to changing the pace, too, than there is on many records that take psych punk bands and proto-punks like the Stooges as primary influences. There's the acoustic chug and unusual lyrical take of "Given Up Girls," for instance, or the hurt ballad of "What It Really?," the No Depression-like country-rock of "Around You," and a bit of the pouting insolence of the Troggs from time to time. It's still too sluggishly draining in tone, though, to register much of an overall clout.
