  • They Say...

If Angelo Badalamenti had grown up in Germany in the late 20th century rather than in New York in the mid-1900s, this is what David Lynch film scores would sound like. Fed on a steady musical diet of blues, spaghetti Western soundtracks, soul, and new wave, this Nuremberg-based band is all about creating a mood so smooth and hazy, you can almost smell the heady mixture of booze and cigarette smoke. On songs such as the opening "Sooner or Later They'll Get Any of Us" and "You and Voodoo," rolling basslines and retro jazz organs establish a strange sense of simpatico with electronic beats as shimmering pedal steel guitar reverberates brightly, with frontman Red's sultry come-hither vocals vaguely reminiscent of a breathier Mark Sandman. The band's experimental influences occasionally get the better of them, trading melody for numbing rhythmic monotony on songs like "If They Ever Steal Your Amazing Grace" and "In Times Like These They Make Men Like Me." But when their soulful sound gels, as it does exceptionally well on the haunting "Laughing Over My Grave" and the Stones-y blues ballad "This Is for When You Come Too Early & Leave Too Late," the results are strikingly original, with West Coast lounge-noir mavens Spain the only adequate comparison. It's not a perfect album by any means, but it does show plenty of promise.
