Bardo Pond finally find cohesion.

  • We Say...

Fifteen years of improvisational free-noise, musical and line-up experimentation, Ticket Crystals finds Bardo Pond — flag-bearers for the minuscule ‘Psychedelphia’ scene — finally operating as a cohesive whole. The band’s namesake is an area referenced in the Tibetan Book of the Dead where souls end up after death to await judgment, which ends either in Nirvana or a return to earth. Vocalist Isobel Sollenberger’s maudlin wails epitomize that isolation and agony, whether in full manic howl over the extended fuzz solos and agitated woodwind of “Destroying Angel,” or more introspective, as on the post–rock “Isle." While this new structured modus operandi shaves off some of the unpredictable improv they were famed for, the ten-minute epics “Moonshine” and “Montana Sacra II”’s show they still aren’t afraid to stretch their legs.
