  • They Say...

Tom Russell, whose roots are in folk and cowboy music, flirts a little bit with rock on this release, which features a full backup band -- drums, assorted keyboards, sax, the whole bit -- and even a few longer electric guitar solos. It's not Russell's best or most original-sounding album, and it's certainly not the one to buy first. But there are some lovely story-songs here, all written or co-written by Russell, who got songwriting help on several tracks from fellow folkies like Steve Young and Tom Pacheco. Russell's prominently mixed vocals are uniformly excellent, moreover, and the harmonizing by Rosie Flores and Katy Moffatt is a nice plus.
