  • They Say...

Adam Franklin blows dust off an eight-year-old Swervedriver B-side to kick off the slight Every Day, Rock 'n' Roll Is Saving My Life single. "The Hitcher," one of Franklin and company's Stealth Bomber pop songs circa 1993's Mezcal Head, is transformed into a brightly ringing acoustic number with some piano tinkles and tape effects. Great! Though not nearly as fiery as the original, this revisit is nearly as dazzling. But the other three numbers are merely humble demos with iffy sound quality. That's too bad, because "Seize the Day" especially sounds like top-quality Franklin material. It's still enjoyable in this grainy form, but it's natural to be frustrated since it's deserving of better treatment. As for the other two selections, the title track and "O Sweet Daughter," they would probably remain so-so with added studio quality. Those who balked at the electronics-heavy nature of Franklin's debut as Toshack Highway might be pleased that these tunes are free of that sort of ornamentation.
