  • They Say...

"If it can be broke then it can be fixed/if it can be fused than it can be split" -- it reads like a mission statement for resourceful sonic collage artists Tunng, who have built their career on breaking genre boundaries by fusing traditionalist acoustic folk with spluttering electronics. Their stunning cover of fellow Londoners Bloc Party's "The Pioneers" is a case in point -- it's a drastic reworking, transforming the song from breathless, anthemic rock into a sweetly understated folk plaint, all deftly fingerpicked acoustics backed by a chunky, slipshod swing-time lope. There's little trace of the original's tense urgency until the final unison, a cappella chorus, whose repeated assertion "We will not be the last" accelerates queasily, growing increasingly fragmented until it simply dissolves. "The Pioneers" was issued both as a one-sided 7" and on CD together with the contents of the band's 2004 debut single -- the lovely if unsettling "Tale from Black" (which made John Peel's final "festive fifty" list that year), and banjo-laden hodgepodge of "Pool Beneath the Pond," -- as well as a video for "Fair Doreen." At just shy of 16 minutes, the three tracks make up an adequate EP length (though "Tale" is also readily available on their first album), and it's all choice, characteristic, charismatic Tunng; charming and creepy in equal measure.
