  • They Say...

More overtly "normal"-sounding than Twerk's two previous full-length releases, 2003's Living Vicariously Through Burnt Bread applies the computerized mind-warp of glitch to instrumental passages with the warmth and soul of classic '70s R&B and funk. One of the dominant sounds of this album is a rich, funky organ and clavinet combo that appears on most of the tracks, excepting only the brief purely electronic glitch-oriented interlude "Return to Hokkaido." Elsewhere, as on the opening "From Brown to Green" and "From Green to Brown," the rounded, burnished organ sound anchors the songs, often integrated with the electronic detritus of glitch, as on the hypnotic "Kiu_Kiu," where a malfunctioning, skipping sound slowly develops into the song's basic rhythm and eventually its primary hook. Those who find "pure" glitch too noisy and forbidding might find the warm, enveloping Living Vicariously Through Burnt Bread a more inviting entrée into the style.
