The proudly freeform ensemble Town & Country walks nimbly the highwire between soothing and unsettling. They stretch single tones out past the breaking point, allowing time to highlight the peaks and contours in the sound. The seven-minute opener "Sun Trolley", with its high, sustained shrieking, sounds at first like an orchestra taking too long to tune up. But as the song progresses, elements enter and fade; a mournful cello cuts through the static, wind chimes clink and clatter like dropped china and finally woodblocks and maracas stagger drunkenly around. Up Above is about the beauty of slowness, and its charms come from being consumed by a single sound, and letting it hypnotize and enthrall you.
