A terrific sampler, from punk to power pop.

  • We Say...

They may range from punk to power pop, but the bands on New Jersey's I Surrender Records all share a love for sturdy melodies. The artists on this sampler all hold fast to a belief in the dictum: "Don't Bore Us, Get to the Chorus", but what makes them unique is the way they apply it. For fans of earnest, searching emo, there's "Fold" from Stars Hide Fire. Those with an appetite for metal brawn will find much to love about the two contributions from Vice Versa, whether the white-hot riffing or the searing vocals. And for those whose collections are heavy with Belle & Sebastian, Apples in Stereo and Of Montreal there's Westminster Abbey's loopy "Hangin' On", which writes The Lovin' Spoonful's "Daydream" as jittery indiepop.
