If you only know Rachmaninov from his piano concertos, take a listen to this.

  • We Say...

Rachmaninov's setting of a text by Edgar Allen Poe is one of the 20th century's great choral works, non-religious but almost tangible in its word-painting; it's said to be the composer's favourite among his compositions. The sound of bells dominates the work, as it did in Russian towns and cities when Rachmaninov was a young man. It's the sound that accompanies you from birth to death, and so takes on an extra dimension in this grand cantata for three soloists, chorus and orchestra. The opening of "The Bells" sweeps you up in its passionate embrace and, in a fine performance (and this one is certainly that), keeps you there until the Grim Reaper "swings his hollow bell." If you only know Rachmaninov from his piano concertos, you will be thrilled by this great work — he was a master orchestrator with a fertile imagination.
