  • They Say...

The AIDS and breast cancer benefit series returns, after a four-year absence, with Shanti Project Collection, Vol. 3, which presents a pair of songs apiece from the Black Heart Procession, Califone, Sigur Rós, Arab Strap, and Kinski. Even though this collection isn't as tightly themed as the previous volumes of this series have been, the expansive, emotional feel of all the tracks included gives the album a cohesive feel. There's definitely a connecting line through such bittersweet yet ultimately uplifting songs as the Black Heart Procession's beautiful opener "Exit Out," Sigur Rós' "Bíum Bíum Bambaló," and Kinski's epic "Schedule for Using Bean Bags and Pillows." Arab Strap provide some extra shadow with "We Know Where You Live" and "Devil Tips," while Califone's "Michigan Girls" and "Cluck Old Hen" add a little more light. The most hypnotic volume in the Shanti Project series, Shanti Project Collection, Vol. 3 is, like the other installments, the rare benefit album where the cause and the music are equally worthy.
