They Say...
On one hand, anything that even slightly resembles an installment of the Kidz Bop record series, with their grating wall of exuberant children singing hits for other little kids, should be disregarded on principle alone. But then something like Go-Kart's Brats on the Beat: Ramones for Kids comes along and that rule comes into question. The album reworks 12 Ramones songs -- from "Blitzkrieg Bop" to "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker," but sadly no "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue" -- spit shined and ready for immediate kiddie consumption. But instead of a tsunami of youthful singers, each song really only boasts a small gang of them, and they're all lovingly led by a punk singer parents will likely recognize, including Jim Lindberg (Pennywise), Tony Reflex (Adolescents), Matt Skiba (Alkaline Trio), Blag Dahlia (the Dwarves), Greg Attonito (Bouncing Souls), and even T.S.O.L.'s Jack Grisham. It's all rather cutesy, but done tastefully enough that it's easy to see how much the older contributors love the Ramones and simply want to spread it around to the younger generations. (Hook them in early and you might not have to deal with the Backstreet Boys later on.) As a result -- and because the songs here come across way more sunny and enthusiastic than the real Ramones -- this is the perfect disc for parents who want to rock out with their kids, but whose little ones might not yet take to actual Ramones recordings. Starter Chucks and jean jackets not included.
