  • They Say...

The second volume in Specialty's Legends of Gospel series is best seen as a companion volume to its predecessor, picking up right where the first volume left off. Starting with sides from 1954, it furthers chronicles important performances from the Specialty records vaults of the Soul Stirrers ("He'll Make a Way," "Be With Me Jesus"), the Chosen Gospel Singers ("The Lifeboat Is Coming," "What a Wonderful Sight"), the Pilgrim Travelers ("Straight Street," "Did You Stop to Pray This Morning?") and the Original Five Blind Boys of Alabama ("Broken Heart of Mine," "Goodbye Mother"). But also aboard are early-1960s sides recorded for the New York based Tru-Sound and Battle labels by the Gate City Singers ("Peace in the Valley"), the Capitol City Stars ("Friends Talk About Me"), the Clefs of Calvary ("Troubles of This World") and the Gable-Airs ("Travelin' Shoes"). An important chunk of gospel history to savor.
