This disc contains a grab bag of R&B, early rock & roll, a bit of rockabilly, and pop-R&B vocal works from the vaults of Ebb, a minor Los Angeles indie label of the late '50s. There aren't any great moments here, but it's serviceable and energetic period fare, the interest heightened by the presence of some sides by recognized artists. In particular, these include four 1957 songs by Professor Longhair, one of them previously unreleased, all of them good-time New Orleans R&B/rock. There's also a 1957 single by Floyd Dixon, but otherwise we're getting into names that no one who is not acquainted with the small print of collector's manuals will know. The influence of Sam Cooke can be felt here and there on the poppier numbers, and Earl Nelson's "Come On" in particular is like a bridge between early Cooke and the early Motown soul sound of Marv Johnson. Tony Harris offers Little Richard-styled rock, while Smokey Hogg comes off rather like a raw Professor Longhair on "Good Mornin' Baby," which sounds more like a studio warm-up than a finished take. Incidentally, this has a different focus than its companion volume, The Ebb Records Story, Vol. 1: The Group Era 1957-1959, and is better than that volume, due both to greater diversity and a higher grade of material.
