The 1972 Guinea version of Now That’s What I Call Music!

  • We Say...

More early ’70s West African rhythm bombs, but unlike Love’s a Real Thing, this collection concentrates on a specific country, Guinea. The Discothèque series was something like the Now compilation of its time, an annual collection of the government-run Syliphone label’s biggest hits. These were stylistically varied; the trio of acoustic cuts by Les Frères Diabaté are superb examples of fingerpicking. But the real killer comes from Pivi et les Baladins, whose “Samba” features some of the wildest guitar playing from the period, in any country.
