Old-school hip-hop at its finest.

  • We Say...

Most old-school fans know B-Boy Records for what it rightfully should be known for: the label that gave birth to the music of Boogie Down Productions. But B-Boy rocked a lot of output both before and after BDP’s first album, 1987’s Criminal Minded, and a decent sampling of it makes it onto this collection.

Of course, BDP is included here (“South Bronx” and “The Bridge Is Over”), but that’s not what you need to discover. On the “you might have heard this one before” tip, you’ve got “Strong Island” by the JVC Force and Sparky Dee’s “Throwdown.” But dig deeper for the rest, including lost nuggets by the always-intense Jewel-T (“I Like It Loud” and “Rock Nice,” both originally on the artist’s own Philly-based Jewel Records); Soul Dimension’s reggae-flavored “Trash-An-Ready”; Levi 167’s “Something Fresh To Swing To” and an excellent late ‘80s Cold Crush Brothers comeback attempt, “Feel the Horns.” Hell, they’ve even got the obscure Biz Markie dis “You Can’t Win” by the Brothers.
