The cosmic corner where space and sludge meet.

  • We Say...

Like the titular monster of Universal’s many Frankenstein sequels, stoner rock (or doom metal, if you prefer) has been improbably kept alive through the years by devoted servants. And for the last decade, no one has fed the beast quite as religiously as New Mexico’s MeteorCity, a label that’s become justifiably synonymous with the cosmic corner where space and sludge meet. Compiled by label founders Aaron Emmel and Jadd Shickler, …And Back to Earth Again is a three-disc, 45-track testament to the amazing (and amazingly heavy) sounds that the MeteorCity has unleashed upon an unsuspecting world.

While most metal and hard rock fans will surely recognize the likes of Nebula, Unida, the Atomic Bitchwax, Spirit Caravan, and the Hidden Hand — the latter two featuring the legendary Scott “Wino” Weinrich, who’s essentially the Johnny Appleseed of the modern stoner/doom movement — some of the set’s most brain-frying and sternum-punishing entries come courtesy of lesser-known Swedish reprobates like Lowrider, Blind Dog and the Mushroom River Band, all of whom sound like they were raised on a steady diet of Captain Beyond and Sir Lord Baltimore. Like a particularly hefty chunk of exotic hash, …And Back to Earth Again can be pretty overwhelming if consumed entirely in one sitting; controlled doses, however, will make for a positively mind-blowing experience.
