We Say...
In the late '60s and the early '70s, James Brown (along with Stax and Motown) was reinventing the sound of R&B every few weeks, and local funk bands across America raced to pick up on his innovations. The Movements series of compilations collects fabulous, quick-and-dirty, little-heard funk singles from that era — Bill Thomas's 1965 "Southern Fried Chicken" could almost have been taken from the same plate as Nat Kendrick's "Mashed Potatoes," and Phil Flowers' "If It Feels Good Do It" sounds like the soul records Brown banged out for members of his revue. And if the House Guests' Mission Impossible-theme-influenced "My Mind Set Me Free" sounds like it owes more than most to the Godfather, that's probably because Bootsy and Catfish Collins recorded it shortly after leaving Brown's band in 1971.
