Thanks largely to the ambassadorial work of the influential American DJ Diplo and the Sri Lankan-British vocalist M.I.A., the funk carioca of Rio de Janeiro has become a global rage — a relentless low-tech marriage of heavy Miami Bass, Portuguese language rapping and rampant sampling of a dubious legality. In Rio, funk carioca parties turn out thousands who dance like crazy to the latest tracks, which are almost always passed around as MP3s rather than pressed onto wax (or CD). This collection was compiled by Tetine — an influential Paulista who helped introduce the genre to London, where he now lives. Most funk carioca artists are anonymous, but this collection includes some burning tracks by a few acts that have actually made a name for themselves, including Deise Tigrona and Tati Quebra Barraco.
