Clearly taking advantage of the fact that 1978's No New Wave — the original, definitive document of New York's No Wave movement merging punk and free jazz — remains absurdly out of print, this 2005 compilation includes three of that album's four participants (James Chance & the Contortions, Teenage Jesus & the Jerks, Mars and DNA, an Arto Lindsay-led band here substituted with a pair of Arto/Neto collaborations), as well as several other similarly arty East Village acts. Drastically divergent inclusions such as Teenage Jesus leader Lydia Lunch's foray into retro lounge music with "Lady Scarface" and the droning synth-not-quite-pop rumble of electronica pioneers Suicide on "Mr. Ray" and "Radiation" make this an easier listen than its notoriously abrasive model, and a useful dark counterpart to the vibrant Mutant Disco comps.
