Proving that disco and juju are more than kissing cousins — go back in time and get down

  • We Say...

Take a cross between the locked-down grooves of Fela Kuti, the uplifting beat of Chic, and the untamed wildness of Funkadelic and you've got a glimpse into the Lagos disco underground. Whether it's the silky sound of Joni Haastrup or the barely-organized chaos of Asiko Rock Group, every song is built on a solid bedrock groove. The gloriously named Sahara All Stars of Jos offer a sweaty aerobic workout on the lengthy "Take Your Soul," while Bongos Ikwue & The Groovies turn "God Bless The Child" upside down to transform it into the guitarfest of "You've Got To Help Yourself." Jay-U Experience channel George Clinton with a ragged "Want some more, need some more" chant before diving into a propulsive juju jam (proving that juju and disco are more than kissing cousins), and Dr Adolf Ahanotu offers his own prescription for the feet on "Ijere." All through, there are more wah-wah pedals than you can shake a stick at, and percussion a-plenty simmering under the bassline. James Brown might have been playing up the coast at the "Rumble in the Jungle" in the '70s, but these guys had moved on and moved out, bringing the music back home to Africa and making Lagos into the Bastion of Funk. Go back in time and get down tonight.
