Held during the summer at a ski resort in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, the annual Gathering on the Mountain jam band/trad rock festival was assembled by the Grateful Dead-inspired Relix Records label in order to pay tribute to the spirit and influence of Jerry Garcia. The fourth installment of the festival finds Relix expanding their documentation of the event from one CD (the third year's Gathering on the Mountain highlights compilation) to three volumes; all are available separately, even though they're fairly similar and feature many of the same Relix recording artists. Gathering on the Mountain Live, Vol. 1 features Jefferson Starship, Merl Saunders, Tom Constanten, Vince Welnick's Missing Man Formation, David and Linda LaFlamme (with former members of It's a Beautiful Day), the Toni Brown Band, and JGB.
