Review
by Alex Abramovich,
eMusic
The blues date back to end of the 19th century, but much of the old-timey music that led to the blues creation survived well into the 20th. This first disc of Yazoo's three-volume survey of archaic forms of American music collects murder ballads (Mississippi John Hurt's "Stack O'Lee Blues" and B.F. Shelton's "Pretty Polly"), religious songs ("On Jordan's Stormy Bank We Stand," by the Seventh Day Adventist Choir, is a standout) and other, near-forgotten songs that had one foot in America's future and the other in its past.
