Review

Seven CDs worth of fiddles and banjos? Do you really need to listen to this? Maybe not all of it, although enthusiasts like me gobble this stuff up. But this is what inspired the New Lost City Ramblers, formed the basis of bluegrass and helped shape the country music industry in later years. Cherry-picking these 167 tracks will unearth plenty of treasure by (relatively) well-known names like Buell Kazee (check out "The Orphan Girl") and Doc Roberts ("Waynesburgh") and a parade of unknowns like Shortbuckle Roark & Family ("I Truly Understand That You Love Another Man") and Ted Chesnut ("He's Only a Miner Killed in the Ground"), much of which is on the cusp between commercial music and folk music, and shows the influence of vaudeville and radio.
