Review
by Michaelangelo Matos, eMusic
These piano stompers created some of the jauntiest music ever recorded.
Sometimes a subtitle tells you all you need to know. In this case, it's "Strutting the Blues: Classic Piano Rags, Blues & Stomps 1928-35." But strutting isn't all these 23 tracks do; sometimes they glide, wiggle, and leer. There's historical value here — Speckled Red's two-part "Dirty Dozen" is one of the first records to spotlight shit-talking as an art form — but most of the time you're having too good a time to worry about what and who these boogie-woogie pianists (who sing less often than not) influenced. My favorite is Herve Duerson's "Avenue Strut," the jauntiest music ever.
