Powerful aboriginal songs from the unforgiving Outback

  • We Say...

For the Australian Aborigines, singing and songs are part of everyday life. More than most in the world, their culture is connected to the earth (a fact that was even truer in 1964 when these field recordings were made). And that, perhaps, is why most of these short pieces have no titles. In a nomadic existence, song names become superfluous; all they need are voices uttering familiar words and the accompaniment of a didgeridoo, and instruments don't come any more natural than a branch hollowed out by termites. Interestingly, where titles do occur, as on "A99" or "Wat Keriba Ged," the songs become more formal and structured, some accompanied by guitar in a simple approximation of Western styles, but lacking the raw power of the other material that taps into the deep well of history. It can be unmelodic, even brutal at times, yet it's a reflection of the way the Aborigines have lived their lives for millennia in the unforgiving Outback.
