Third in an exceptional series finds the steel-string scene in good health.

  • We Say...

In the 21st century an acoustic guitar compilation may seem a quaint notion (where is the Guitar Hero for that?) but Tompkins Square's Imaginational Anthem series has not just unearthed the continuing steel-string tradition, but made it relevant. While the first volume paid tribute to its forefathers (John Fahey, Sandy Bull, Max Ochs) and the second branched out to encompass both the UK scene and fine female pickers, the third installment — rather than reaching the bottom of the well — finds the current scene in good health. Newcomers like Ben Reynolds and Cian Nugent (no relation) hail from overseas and render eloquent opening statements for themselves. And the net gets cast wider to draw in sympathetic folk like laptopper Greg Davis and R. Keenan Lawler (who has played with everyone from Pelt to Matmos to My Morning Jacket).

As always, IA seamlessly blends together the past and present, showcasing not just upstarts but the criminally-neglected, and the latter group makes their own strong claim for history here. Banjoist George Stavis (once signed to Vanguard) contributes a driving track "Goblins" while composer Richard Crandell (who has released mesmeric mbira albums for the Tzadik label) returns to his first instrument, delivering the meditative "Zocalo." Much like the song's namesake (a Mexican town square), it suggests a temporal space for musicians, mirroring the comp's intentions as well.
