Ironic or serious? It's hard to tell, even as you're hydroplaning along to Versus' groove.

  • We Say...

At their best, Versus combined the simple, strummy rhythms of the K Records scene with the sonic virtuosity and penchant for experimentation of Band of Susans, Mission of Burma and Sonic Youth. Dead Leaves, a collection of the New York-based indie-rock band's seven-inch singles and demos from the early '90s, finds Versus hitting their stride and, often enough, hydroplaning on their own groove. Misanthropic lyrics that might be ironic or might be serious (it's hard to tell) are sung by both Richard Baluyut and Fontaine Toups, and as the album progresses the songs begin to reach for the kind of guitar-driven pop that made the Smashing Pumpkins stadium-fillers. Versus were far better, but a lot of good that did them at the time.

  • They Say...

Dead Leaves is a collection of singles, outtakes and demos featuring Versus' debut offerings "Insomnia" and "Bright Light" as well as "Tin Foil Star," their stunning contribution to the Simple Machines label's Working Holiday series. Energetic but erratic, it's by no means the best introduction to the group, but the abundance of obscure material makes it essential for fans.
