  • We Say...

Iyer is a composer and a jazz pianist. He is also the son of Indian immigrants. Ladd is an African-American poet, writer and vocal artist. (It'd be hard to call him either a singer or a rapper — you'll see why). Using musicians who pound out raucous jazz/funk as easily as they sketch a lyrical melody, and a few actor/vocalists, Iyer and Ladd have created a musical and linguistic exploration of a world in motion: with people — especially people of color — emigrating, immigrating, passing through that global nexus of transportation, optimism, surveillance and suspicion that we call the Airport. At times contemplative and subtly insightful ("The Color of My Circumference"), at others angry and explosive ("Security," "TLC"), In What Language? concludes with a contemporary hymn to the post-9/11 global village called "Plastic Bag," a spoken song that will haunt you the next time you pass a traveler with one of those ubiquitous red, white and black-striped bags.
