Bon Iver's Justin Vernon makes some new friends and departs the cabin

  • We Say...

Steadfast devotees of Bon Iver's soft, languorous folk songs will be tempted to preemptively decry Volcano Choir, a longstanding collaboration between Justin Vernon and fellow Wisconsinites Collections of Colonies of Bees, as an oddball lark: warped and warbly, the group's debut LP, Unmap, is unfamiliar ground, a collection of rich, glistening sound assemblages with loads of moving parts and nary a broken heart.

For an artist so frequently mythologized as "organic" (He recorded in a cabin in the woods! In deep, dark winter!), it's not particularly surprising that Vernon is itching to indulge other urges; Unmap builds on the trembling falsetto and studio diddling Vernon hinted at on Bon Iver's Blood Bank EP, and its shifting structures and layered, occasionally nonsensical vocals — less literal declarations than sounds — reveal an affinity for the cacophonous. Collections of Colonies of Bees, known for its propulsive, instrumental dirges, provides a compelling counterpoint to Vernon's airy vocals — on "Island, Is," Vernon's hoots and whispers are balanced by synthesizer whirls and testy drums, and that give-and-take is enough to keep anyone frozen in their headphones. Unmap isn't a folk record in any traditional sense, but it's no less evocative, and no less moving.
