Country Giant

Waylon Jennings

  • We Say...

Waylon hisself might not even know when these recordings were made, though the mid-to-late '60s seems like as good a guess as any — during that period Jennings was mutating into a honky-tonk singer, toughening up for his '70s heyday as country's Outlaw Number One. Waylon growls through the early rock & roll classic "Money" (in his bark, "give me money" sounds more like a robbery than a dream) and "White Lightnin,'" arguably the greatest country-blues classic this side of "C.C. Rider," suits his bare-knuckled voice oh so perfectly.

But it's the ballads that make this collection so endearing: "Abilene" dreamy and languid, "Crying" melancholy and just a little pissed, "Dream Baby" strolling like the tumbleweeds. There's a loneliness to Waylon's voice — especially when sopped in reverb, as it is here — that's irresistible, which makes his cover of Dylan's "Don't Think Twice" (Bobby Z's greatest song) straight-up essential. Waylon ups the tempo and changes the tone; it's not about getting left, it's about leaving now, a role-reversal because Waylon's nobody's fool. (Except a fool for you.)

Consider yourself warned that the fidelity of these recordings varies between "dog shit" and "pea soup," but no amount of crackles and overdriven microphones could possibly conceal just how great these songs and performances are. Listen a little harder and you'll be alright.
