Hand claps, claims Stephen Ramsay, are “galvanized emotion.” That’s probably why Young Galaxy’s debut single features them prominently. As a former guitarist for the indie-pop group Stars, Ramsay is no stranger to its enhancement of an upbeat tune, but on “Swing Your Heartache” the handclaps are a morose coda to an epic dirge. Too dire? Try “The Golden Coin,” in which the duo ups the tempo, but keeps the space-rock atmospherics in place for a galactic guitar solo. Credit for this solar system of sound? That goes to the group’s secret weapon, producer Jace Lasek, who wrangles the handclaps, synthesizers and the standard rock instrumentation into empyreal vistas worthy of Spiritualized.
