Drum machine: it’s the new guitar. Or so you might think if you listened to any of the vital indie music coming out of the Northwest these days. With the Blow, YACHT, E*Rock and Panther all eschewing the six-string for the equally-as-cheap beatbox, there’s a new punk rock being born. Panther, known to his mother as Charlie Salas-Humara, first came to prominence early in 2007 with the full-length Secret Lawns. Here, on this EP for the Audio Dregs label, Salas-Humara recycles one song from Lawns (“You Don’t Want Your Nails Done”) and brings in E*Rock and Copy for remix duty on two others. Even so, there’s plenty of the quick and dirty rave-ups that made Lawns a cult success. “Black Baby” is a representative slice: fluttering electronics form a bed over which Salas-Humara moans, cajoles and cavorts in a faux-Prince squeal. Not bad for a white boy and a drum machine.
