Loose-limbed hard-bop from an all-star lineup

  • We Say...

Contrary to what you might infer from its title, this is a mostly loose-limbed, bop-centric blowing session rather than one of the many Lateef records emphasizing Eastern flavors or high-concept spirituality. The leader exclusively plays tenor saxophone, and the gem in the program is actually the lone ballad, pianist Barry Harris's amber-lit reworking of "Round Midnight" entitled "I Need You," which Lateef dominates with a breathy, seductive yearning akin to the deep-well blues tone of Ben Webster. By contrast, "Backyard" (another Harris composition) contains a breezy informality that's true to its title, and features trumpeter Nat Adderley on mute. Along with Harris, the quintet's rhythm section includes bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes, an ideal pair for this nascent hard-bop of 1960, when the subgenre still emphasized staccato rhythms and hadn't yet evolved into stylistic modes dissimilar from straight bebop. Everybody grabs a solo on the opener "Hazing" (Hayes in particular is afforded a lot of rat-ta-tat snare space), and be it Nat Adderley's "Sassy Ann" or his brother Cannonball's "Rip de Boom," it's clear that this was a time when the beatnik-hipster energy was moving from the underground into the mainstream of Kennedy's Camelot. The best part is how comfortable Lateef sounds in this setting. It's a side of his musical personality that has become obscured over time.
