They Say All Music Guide

The second full-length from South London upstarts Tom Crook, Simeon Bowring, and DJ D Zine sees the trio ease off the funk that molded their Visit EP and go all out for a madcap album of electro closer to their 1998 long-player, Fresh Juice. “Black Ice” opens the album, the obligatory wobbling bass applying low-end pressure to spiralling cybernetic melodics with just enough time for the listener to catch their breath before A1 People drop into the thunderous “Casio Rock,” the title a nod to the Japanese manufacturers’ cheap and cheerful VL Tone, whose blip presets provided the final flourish to many an electro classic. Aside from a pair of melancholic vocodered pieces — “The Reason” and “The Freak” — there is little evidence of a mooted change of direction, but with beats this lively, there’s plenty of life in A1 People yet. – Kingsley Marshall
