Known for her contributions to the all-female string band collective Uncle Earl, Abigail Washburn stepped out in 2005 for a debut record under her own name. Though most of the songs are Washburn originals, it isn't so much a solo record in terms of instrumentation; indeed, three of the high-profile players who contributed — banjo great Bela Fleck, Grammy-nominated fiddler Casey Driessen and cellist Ben Sollee — have since teamed with Washburn to form the adventurous Sparrow Quartet. They help to make Song of the Traveling Daughter much more musically accomplished and auspicious than a typical debut album.
