She's been through hell and more heartbreak - and lived to tell about it
2011 | Label: XL Recordings/Columbia

When she released her debut album 19 in 2009, Adele established herself as one of pop’s best new voices, delivering torchy, soul-steeped tunes that appealed to both suburban moms turned off by Amy Winehouse‘s outsized, afoul-of-the-law persona and heartbroken teenage girls who repurposed her uplifting lyrics for Facebook status updates.

Adele’s global success should’ve resulted in a second album about coping with the pratfalls of success. Instead, the girl sounds like she’s been through hell and more heartbreak – and lived to tell about it. But what a boon for her music: 21 is one of the most tuneful pop records of the year, and while the 22-year-old has said in interviews that she found inspiration in contemporary Nashville pop, 21 borrows liberally from every great American music tradition, from Motown and Tin Pan Alley to ’70s AM Gold and R&B.

21‘s best tracks find Adele coping with broken relationships and the damaged psyches of dudes who’ve done her wrong. Lead single “Rolling in the Deep” plays like the catchiest girl-group tune the Supremes never recorded, with Adele vowing revenge – “There’s a fire starting in my heart/ Reaching a fever pitch, and it’s bringing me out the dark” – over… read more »

The voice. The music. They move me and I relate. Isn't that what the essence of "song" is for each of us? We find bits and pieces of ourselves in songs and their interpreters. They - all of the voices that go into each creation, are sometimes able to put into words and tune what we were unable to, until that first moment of recognition, vaguely define a moving life experience that we've had. We are pulled into that familiarity when we hear it. Why? Because after we hear it, we feel it. Thankfully, there is a tremendous pool of Artists and genres we have to capture those experiences and none are right or wrong, they are simply reflecting us back to us. At the other swing of the pendulum, it may be as primal as a good beat that refuses to allow us to stay in our seats. Cheers to individuality!

because her voice is still a tad impressive.

Overrated

I mean really...her sound isn't original. Let's face it. She's Amy Winehouse's replacement in the music biz. That's pretty much the only reason for her well received debut.

Most loathed performer of all time.

There is no small enough measure of time to clock how fast my hand shuts off the radio and the first note of one of her songs. I have no idea what the rest of you see/hear in her. She's the musical equivalent of running a metal file over my teeth.

Captivating!

Lately, I've been delving into the catalog of Amy Winehouse, especially after her tragic death. Enter Adele. The song Someone Like You moves me, and probably a million others. It is well written and heartfelt. NPR even analyzed the chord progression for the 'hook'. Never mind, it is a great song that we can all relate to. The rest of the album is simply icing on the cake.

Wow, this girl has got it goin on. She deserved every Grammy she received. I guess the Amy Winehouse comparisons are inevitable but Adele is a better natural singer. Considering her relative youth it's hard to believe she can pour so much feeling and such a range of emotion into each song. 21 is one of the best albums in this genre in years and is a must have in my opinion (and being from Memphis I've seen and heard my share of R&B). Preserve those vocal chords my dear, I want more!

What Sophomore Jinx?

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

The sophomore jinx. It's a trope as old as rock criticism itself: Band rockets out of nowhere and gains a quick, huge, passionate following. They go from playing basements to big stages in Barcelona in 36 minutes, get name-checked by aging rockers aching to look cool and dropped into television shows looking to expand their demographic. Then, a year later, they released their Difficult Second Record and drop off the map completely. The jinx has… more »

About the Album: Adele’s 21

By J. Edward Keyes, Editor-in-Chief

In the space of two years, London singer Adele went from being a buzzy singer-songwriter on a small indie label to a globally-recognized vocalist, netting a Grammy for Best New Artist and sharing a stage with Kelly Clarkson and Leona Lewis at the 2008 revival of VH1's Divas Live series. And though Adele could be considered, in the loosest possible way, a diva, there is something more direct and honest and cutting about her music.… more »
