Rebel guitarist tweaks tradition.
Label: Favored Nations

A masterful exponent of the Celtic-styled hammer-on/pull-off technique, Legg's sheer command is astounding here on fingerstyle ditties like "Uncle Adrian," "The Ederly Jig" and "Short Story." But it's Legg's renegade streak that we've really come to admire over the years, and his playfully irreverent side manifests on the Kottke-esque slide vehicle "The One-Eyed Turk, his countrified Albert Lee-meets-Joe Pass turn on "Jam Today" and his knucklebusting closer "Een Kleijne Komedye." Few possess the chops (and sense of humor) of this uncommon acoustic guitarist.

Better live

Somehow, these songs need to be enlived by Legg's stage personality to catch fire. All the notes are in the right place, but the soul seems to be lacking. La Giga Anziana is a bittersweet, slower number which is more moving than the rest, with Old Friends a close runner-up.

More of the same from Legg

CommanderDoughboy

I've been a fan of Adrian Legg for more than 14 years now, catching him in concert three times and own nearly all of his albums. Perhaps that's why the songs on Guitar Bones mostly fall flat with me; they all sound like songs he's released before. If you're new to Legg, his fancy guitar picking will likely impress, and by all means catch him in concert. He'll have you laughing with his stories one moment and your jaw dropping on the floor the next as he pulls off the most complicated guitar playing as effortlessly as he is breathing. As far as his music goes, this might be a decent place to start, although his earlier work (which isn't available on eMusic as of this writing) would be a better choice.

They Say All Music Guide

Long considered one of the finest fingerstyle guitarists on the globe, Adrian Legg has performed with a divergent array of artists, including high-octane rock guitar aces Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. He’s been the recipient of numerous guitar-based awards and has composed several instructional books. Legg’s artistry resides within his now-fabled acoustic guitar work, and with Guitar Bones, Legg utilizes various microphone techniques to enhance his altogether superb solo acoustic performances. He navigates through country blues motifs, a few jazz interludes, and American bluegrass, among other genres. The guitarist’s British roots surface via his nimble strumming and his interweaving lines on the rhythmically charged English folk number titled “Jam Today.” At times, Legg employs legato techniques to complement his gliding movements and complexly fabricated chord progressions as he conveys much sentiment during the poignantly beautiful piece titled “Old Friends.” Overall, this 2002 release represents Legg’s eighth solo outing. Hence, the results prove to be infinitely gratifying. Strongly Recommended – Glenn Astarita
