Afrobutt is the nom de disque of Londoner Steve Kotey, whom you may recognize from the dub-disco project Akwaaba, his Bear Funk and Hairy Claw labels (which gave the world Lindstrom, Todd Terje and Brennan Green), DJing for eclectic dance act Chicken Lips or from Strut's Disco Italia, which he compiled. As Afrobutt, Kotey indulges his deepest, most perverted disco fantasies, spanning the entire genre — from the downright funky "Kali Dreams" to the samba-fied sashay of "Torro De Butt" to the cosmic Italo of "Lucifer Went to Church" to an imagined Bollywood remake of Saturday Night Fever on "Banger Disco". Wunderbutt's ultimate success may come down to your tolerance of mid '80s synth sounds, but even devotees of disco's '70s glory days will find this to be an elegant disco pastiche, done with pizzazz and reverence, with no irony or Afro wigs in sight.
