I have listened to several versions of these fugues, even on Vinyl and the Juliard Quartet version on LP and now on CD. But I must say this is one of the best ones, the recording is excellent, instrumental textures ooze from all corners and they just seem to gently ease one out of the body
For many, many, years I have relied on the Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields version for my Art of Fugue enjoyment. This isn't so encyclopaedic (not all the variations, but the Marriner version IS 2 discs) but it FEELS right - not so twittery as a lot of 'authentic' realisations, and such a good spread of different groupings to give a sense of progression.
