The Air America host mixes a voracious intellect and political insight with unrepentantly juvenile humor.
2004 | Label: IndieBlu Music / Entertainment One Distribution

Al Franken is yet another Saturday Night Live alumnus turned best-selling political author turned right-wing foe turned radio station impresario turned United States Senate candidate. (This could have been your life, Garrett Morris!) The Very Best of the O'Franken Factor culls material from the first year of his show on Air America, the burgeoning radio network that he helped launch to counter the right's dominance of our Interstates 'most crucial medium. Franken lacks the radio expertise of Howard Stern, but he mixes a voracious intellect and political insight with unrepentantly juvenile humor. Longtime fans will be pleasantly surprised to find the comedian's old partner, Tom Davis, dropping in for a skit. Think he'll snag a spot on Franken's senate staff?

All the one stars are from conservative hacks who would know comedy if it bit them on the HEY Now....

Al is the best

Jagman

Being a fan of Al’s since the 70’s I can say he is a consummate professional at everything he does, his books are meticulously researched, he is a historian of humor, and is a very funny man who is dedicated to the cause of making this country a better place. We will be lucky to have him as a senator. The right wingers that hate him are just jealous that he is smarter than they are. This is a funny and enlightening listen, download the whole thing.

Hasn't uttered a funny line since SNL circa 1977

Franken is unfunny, period. That's not emusic's fault. The left, in general, has no concept of humor. Unfortunately, they have no concept of sustainable political structures, either.

Happily Bashing The Right

bill_bohrer

Al Franken is intelligent, insightful, well read, does his research, and lives to bash "The Right". If your only criticism is that you don't him, or he's "mean", well... this is not the album FOR you, this is the album ABOUT you... 8-]

Unhappy?

dd3000

What you people don't get is that liberals are not unhappy, they just are able to see that the world could be so much better than it currently is. This is what we call optimism.

An unhappy bitter person, who does not have one positive thing to say on any subject.

Bush is gone (at last) but this album still funny!

ElectroJosh

I give this album four stars, even though some tracks are way better than others. The "Ann Coulter in the Green Room" series is the best! "Cocktail Party at the Texacos" is also hilarious.

Post-Millennial Comedy

By Jay Ruttenberg, eMusic Contributor

If, by the turn of the millennium, the album format was a budding curio, the comedy record seemed like a bona fide relic from a long-gone era when people gathered around turntables smoking strange cigarettes and wearing fake arrows through their heads. Oddly, the medium has not only survived into the digital age, but staged a minor comeback. There are a number of reasons for its resilience: the launch of Comedy Central's CD imprint; the… more »

They Say All Music Guide

When the left-leaning talk-radio network Air America hit the airwaves, Al Franken was the most famous figure in the initial lineup of show hosts. He and co-host Katherine Lanpher called their program The O’Franken Factor in the hopes that Fox talking head Bill O’Reilly would sue and provide more publicity. The O’Franken Factor Factor collects 27 of the show’s crafted comedy bits. The humor falls into three basic categories. Of little substance are bits that mock right-wing pundits of the time like Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh. While these bits will certainly bring a smile to the face of those sympathetic with Franken’s viewpoint, the fact is these bits will not age well and are often simple-minded. A small number of skits on this CD are about radio itself. One of the funniest pieces, “The Audio Crawl,” attempts to make Air America sound like CNN, Fox News, and CNBC look, and does a perfect job of pointing out the ludicrous qualities of a 24-hour news cycle. The very best sections of the CD use news events as a jumping-off point to make barbed satirical jabs at the neo-conservative ideology that is the show’s (and the network’s) real enemy. A conversation between Dick Cheney and Judge Antonin Scalia (voiced by Franken and actor Stanley Tucci) manages to skewer the Bush administration’s rampant cronyism while producing laughs. And the final piece, a broadcast of “The Iraqi Independence Day Parade,” has become more heartbreaking than funny in the months since it originally aired (which was right after the hand over of power in Iraq in late June of 2004). While this album will certainly play well to the base, Franken’s books offer sharper observations and funnier moments. – Perry Seibert
