my favorite Mahler 9

bplonline

This is a symphony I am slowly learning to love. My big faves in the Mahler cycle are 6, 2, 4, 5 and 1 in that order. This recording is rapidly adding 9 to the list (not that I HATE any of the others). It is so ALIVE! It communicates to me more that any recording of the 9th I have heard.

Gilbert proves himself with a masterful 9

ClassicalTerrorist

Alan Gilbert, the newest conductor for the NYPHIl, has earned a spot among other illustrious mahler conductors that have headed the NYPO[Walter,Bernstein,Mahlerhimself]. My first experiece with him was a magnificent Mahler 3[alsoavailableonemusicwiththeNYPOfor6credits]. This proves that was no fluke, I find this performance to be as exciting as almost any, and among new releases, one of the best[alongwithRattlesrecentrelease]. One can only pray that the stubborn NYPhil audiences can appreciate his gifts and tolerate this somewhat eclectic programs. Bravo Alan! Also, splendid playing by the Royal Stockholm in such a difficult score.

A Refreshing View of the Mahler 9

shortwave

Mahler was a master at writing wonderful orchestral colours and the 9th is a perfect example of his craft. Alan Gilbert's reading of this monumental work is incisive and convincing. At times, his interpretation is quite enlightening, and no more so than in the final movement where he allows the music to take its time to flower before finally closing with great tenderness. I am not familiar with Gilbert's other recordings, so it was pleasing to meet him in such a landmark work. I will certainly be seeking out more of his work and watching with interest as his career continues to grow. Like others before me who have commented on the recording quality, I found the sound quite clear and not at all unpleasant. Indeed, although I own several other recordings of this work, I feel this one is a worthy addition because I hear different things within it, helping me come to better understand both Mahler's intentions and each conductor's point of view. Highly recommended.

Excellent

This is a wonderful performance. The sound is sharply focused but there's always room for another Mahler 9 when its as good as this

Distinctive Interpretation

Adding my two cents. I was pleasantly surprised by this performance. Gilbert brings a fresh, distinctive point of view to one of my favorite works. New York is lucky to have him.

Really good recording....

mahlerii

I put dots in my title because even though this is very well recorded, it may be too well recorded. It almost seems that the microphones were placed right in the instruments at times. In the tuttis the sound is very good, but when the textures thin, the sound gets closer. Some may really like this, but I am used to more of a concerthall type experience. My immediate comparison is with Simon Rattle's new recording with the Berlin Philharmonic. Here the sound is much less close up and not as "in your face". The interpretation however is very good. So far I have no quibbles with the performance, which establishes Gilbert as a master conductor in this difficult score. You may feel different about the sound that I, however. I own many Mahler 9ths, so this will take a good place in my collection of 9ths. And only 4 credits-it is a very good deal.
