Anglos pay raucous tribute to their roots-rock influences with swagger and panache
Label: ATO Records

If you were not equipped with any biographical information, you could spend a lot of time guessing before you correctly identified Alberta Cross's background as Anglo-Swedish. Their debut, 2007's The Thief & the Heartbreaker mini-album, bespoke a wholehearted infatuation with America. Alberta Cross managed the rare trick of paying appropriate homage to their influences — principally The Band and Neil Young — via modern descendents Kings of Leon, Black Crowes and Ryan Adams, without spending the entire album in a state of abashed genuflection.

Broken Side Of Time, Alberta Cross's first full-length, was written in New York and recorded in Austin. And yet, somewhat ironically, it benefits from a willingness, or perhaps growing confidence, to infuse gothic Americana with elements of unmistakably European stadium rock: "ATX" and "Leave Us And Forgive Us" evoke U2 circa Achtung Baby and The Unforgettable Fire, respectively. lots of influences

Band of Horses, Foreign Born, Jeremy Enigk and Broken Social Scene all come to mind when hearing this band. A fine album. Check out "Taking Control" and then delve deeper into it, you won't be sorry you took the time.

The only real rock band in Brooklyn!

gormanbechard

This is the band for people who are sick of the wimpy crap coming out of Brooklyn. Real guitars, a singer whose voice is so raw and real that every phrase is nothing short of heartbreakingly brilliant, songs that creep into your soul and hurt you just a little. Really if Old Man Chicago doesn't give you chills, then check your pulse. Albert Cross is rock n roll the way it should be, like the Replacements meet Skynyrd, and Neil Young is their Goddaddy. Just buy it!

One of The Best of 2009

I've been obsessed with this band since their debut EP and this, their first LP, more than delivers. It's like Neil Young Crazyhorse meets Kurt Cobain. Get into this band!
