Smells like Memphis

misterrosewater

I fell into Big Star backwards, starting with this album. I was working at a radio station in BF South Dakota when this little gem came into the office. I listened to it, loved it, and began digging into the back catalog of this Chilton guy. I was green to most of the Replacements good stuff, so as one can imagine most of my paychecks were going towards expanding my collection with everything and anything Chilton/Westerberg related. Lies and Don't Stop are jams, and the horn section that permeates the record sounds at home with Alex's rediscovered white boy soul.

They Say All Music Guide

Since the mid-’80s, all Alex Chilton albums are basically interchangeable. Chilton and his bar band get together and knock off a handful of mediocre new songs and several (mostly obscure) R&B and rock & roll oldies. Now that Chilton is more or less sober, his pitch is a bit better, yet there isn’t anything particularly special about A Man Called Destruction, other than the delightfully corny “What’s Your Sign?,” where Alex sings the horoscope in an attempt to pick up a girl, even if it’s all listenable. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
