late 15th-century chansons
As is the case with much secular music of the period, the mood here alternates between slow and downright miserable! This isn't a complaint, more a warning for the uninitiated. Within the confines of the genre there is plenty of variety provided by the 3 singers and 5 instrumentalists of Ensemble Unicorn - with countertenor, tenor, and bass-baritone the vocal pieces are well varied, and there are instrumental pieces scattered throughout the disc. If you're looking to expand your collection, Agricola is a significant figure of the 15th century, and this is a good disc to start with.
