a very nice album, and a great versatile pianist -- there are at least 4 spellings of Alexei/Alexsei Lubimov/Lyubimov and you'll find him playing everything from this selection to Charles Ives, Louis Couperin, Brahms and late Beethoven.

Everything new is old again

The ghost of Chopin wafts around this collection, though it certainly cannot be called derivative. During the Soviet period, composers who wanted to explore their own personal musical visions often had to do so in secret, or risk the displeasure of the regime. Even with limited access to modern music, many embraced (or at least flirted with) styles imported from the West, in the course of developing their own unique styles. Thus "post-avant-garde". All of the music here is tonal, but certainly not a throwback to any earlier time. Impossible to categorise; just as some of the best wines are made from grapes grown in adverse conditions, so are we the beneficiaries of some remarkable originality in music making. These pieces probably do not represent these composers' most important works, but I gave five stars for enjoyability, interest and a fine rendition by Alexei Lubimov.
