aloe blacc can sing, no doubt and for that I will always check his stuff, but this album is a bit too heavy on some jiminy cricket stuff. uplifting yea, but feels corny at times. still though-- dude can sing.

I think this album is mislabelled as Rap/Hip-Hop. My daughter first turned me on to Aloe Blacc's "I need a dollar" from his second solo effort ("Good Things" 2010) - which blew me away. This album, which seems to have preceded ? his debut solo "Shine Through" (2006) is a mix. I would categorize tracks 2, 8, 9, 10, 12 & 14 as R&B/Soul; 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, &13 as pop (+/-) and tracks 6 & 11 as Rap/HipHop. I generally don't like rap/hip-hop, and this hasn't changed my mind. I think of Blacc as an R&B/Soul singer and his strongest efforts here fall in that category, especially 2, 5 & 8, but some of what I call pop tunes have catchy hooks, and accessible lyrics. Definitely worth downloading - especially as a complement to Good Things.
