Husband and wife make beautiful music together.
Label: Sunnyside Records

This married couple from Mali might be the hottest thing in world music these days; they could give eclecticism a good name. On this best-of spanning 1998-2003, they seep salsa, r&b, reggae and rock into the bluesy sound of their desert homeland to create deep, magnetic grooves that motorvate infectious melodies and punchy horn arrangements. Amado's jangly guitar work, somehow driving and languid at the same time, provides the signature sound, but Mariam's almost Middle Eastern vocals ("Djagneba") sometimes threaten to steal the show.

Yet again unavailable

Although a great supporter of emusic, I get very annoyed that so much is only available for download in North America and not the rest of the World. Come on emusic, it surely is not because you are prepared to pay in the States but not the rest of the World to make music available? Are we subsidising users in the States?

Je Pense a Toi

The title track is a winner. Melodic and haunting, Amadou's leading vocal gets exactly the right support from Miriam's high vocal part and the swirling string parts. Chantez Chantez (jouez, jouez, dansez, dansez) is a bluesy rocker that sounds like the Mississippi delta transported to French-speaking Mali. Walide is very African with rhythm guitar providing the propulsion instead of any drums.

I like a lot of African music, but this is exceptional in its joyfulness and accessibility. Excellent!

Better than a greatest hits

A amazing selection of songs by one of Mali's best. Many hours of enjoyment here. If you are new to African or Afro-pop this is a good place to start.

Valentine's Day

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

"Love's a Real Thing," goes the song by the wonderful Senegambian group Super Eagles, and rarely does that sentiment ring truer than during the middle part of February. Whether it's the cold weather, the sudden prevalence of red hearts and roses, or some combination of the two, there's something about the dead of winter that inspires cuddling and coy glances. What better way to celebrate the 14th than with a playlist full of romantic music? Our… more »

African Guitar Greats

By Michelangelo Matos, eMusic Contributor

Sure, African music begins with the drum — there, rhythm talks, does calisthenics, figures impossible equations on the abacus, works bodies and minds into frenzy, all that. But so do the guitars — what many Western listeners most adore about African music boils down to six strings and ridiculous technique, whether it's billowing or shredding, locking the rhythm into place or shadowboxing with it, stating themes or stepping out. This Dozen isn't a scientific survey… more »

Blind Musicians

By John Morthland, eMusic Contributor

Is it true that blind people go into music careers all out of proportion to their numbers, and if so, why? There are no credible studies that statistically answer the first question, but simple observation says it's probably true. As for the second question, there are several theories. Folk wisdom has long held that when one sense is denied, a person's other senses are heightened; thus, the blind hear better than sighted people. Indeed, one… more »
