Gutwrenching

Operdoc

It pains me to hear this treacly crap again. Hard to believe how many "hits" they had. I used to curse and scream every time they came on the radio which was way too often.

I like Midlake...and America.

Woman Tonight is horrid, others may be questionable, but You Cannot Deny! much of this collection. Ventura Highway, Tin Man, Lonely People, Sister Golden Hair...classics that deserve better retrospective stature among the music snobs that I consider myself legion.

The late Phil Hartman drew the cover

fontmaven

Yes. Phil Hartman. From "SNL" and "News Radio". That Phil Hartman. Spelled his name with two "N's" then, but it's him. Drew the ink horse on Poco's "Legend" too.

Be selective from the album. There are some great tunes here.

Sorry Nancy!

Never has there been a band that encouraged young guitarists (ventura highway) and repulsed them at the same time: Daisy Jane, I Need You and yes...Muskrat Love!! I mean...the Capt and Tennille covered Muskrat Love. I know it was a 70's thing (I lived through it) OK...now that I got that off my chest, there are some fun songs: Horse With No Name, Ventura Hwy and Sister Golden Hair. I will say this about America; they knew how to make hits.

They Say All Music Guide

Mirroring the cover art depiction of America’s dual life in England and the U.S., History: Greatest Hits perfectly spotlights both the polished and layered production of British studio legend George Martin and the West Coast tones of the band’s folk-pop style. Featuring the group’s many chart toppers from the first half of the ’70s, this definitive roundup includes Neil Young-style acoustic sides like “Lonely People,” the hippie MOR of “Muskrat Love,” and breezy acid rock like “Sandman.” And even though Martin didn’t produce the entire lot of songs here, his sophisticated and mostly subtle way with strings, keyboards, and multi-track guitars is in evidence throughout. Adding to the fun are additional highlights like the updated surf cut “Sister Golden Hair” and ingenious McCartney-esque pop like “Only in Your Heart” and “Daisy Jane.” An essential collection for fans who like their ’70s folk with a pop sheen, loads of hooks, and top-drawer arrangements. – Stephen Cook
